MERCURY, FORD MOTOR Company’s ‘dress-up division’ makes a valiant attempt to compete with the many compact, import sporty coupes by introducing a special edition Cougar, named the Zn. That’s right, this new Cougar is only available in screaming yellow zinc. Combine the hot color with Ford’s most opulent rendition of its ‘New Edge Design’ exterior styling with sleek, tight and sexy lines, you have a winning appearance.
The new Cougar Zn does come to the starting line with a good combination of power and performance such as a High-Output, 196HP, 2.5liter, 24v, DOHC, V6 engine taken from the discontinued Ford Contour, (Mondeo) SVT sport sedan. Mated to this hot engine is a short throw, 5-speed manual. Underneath you is an independent suspension riding on 17in. tires/wheels.
Acceleration to 100km from 0 is a very good 6.8sec. Power-assisted, ABS steel disc brakes at all 4-corners safely and quickly slow you down. Price is $22,000.00.
WHY IT DIDN’T MAKE IT
The new, 2001 Mercury Cougar Zn is a great looking sporty coupe that comes loaded for action, and is a good value for your money. But to be really outstanding it needs more good, ole’ horsepower.
