MORGANS TO RACE in new Cup Class in 2003 British GT. Hot on the heels of the Morgan Aero 8’s stunning return to international GT racing at Le Mans, Morgan’s renaissance in top class motor racing is set to continue next year in the British GT Championship, Morgan unveiled today at the Birmingham Motor Show.
Minister for Sport Richard Caborn unveiled a new Morgan racecar designed for the Championship at the NEC today during the Motorsport Day of the British Motor Show.
The new sprint racing versions of the Aero 8, developed by at Morgan’s Malvern factory by its race car arm Aero 8 Racing, will run in a new ‘Cup Class’ – a specification introduced by the British Racing Driver’s Club (BRDC) to attract new entries from high-performance GT cars built to a lower specification than the current GTO class.
“The Morgan marque represents the very best of British skill and craftsmanship in producing superb sports cars. I am delighted to see Morgan racing cars back on the race track.” Commented Minister of Sport Richard Caborn.
Christopher Lawrence, 1962 Le Mans class winner, Technical Consultant to the 2002 Morgan Le Mans team and Chief Development Engineer at Morgan Motor Company, explains the background to the new car:
“We have taken many of the lessons learned from this year’s Le Mans race project, and in particular the experience gained by the team in the early rounds of this year’s British GT Championship, which were used to shake down the Le Mans car. Putting all that knowledge together, we’ve now developed a really competitive GT racecar. We have already built two cars for a customer who will run them in the Speedvision series in the USA, and interest is beginning to build up in the UK.
With the first two customers expected to confirm orders for Cup Class Morgans shortly, and other contenders possible from Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Porsche, Panoz, TVR and Vauxhall, among others, the British GT looks set to become a more exciting championship than ever.
