IN LESS THAN 200 days Le Mans 24 hour 2003 starts. Our LM expert Henrik Vejgaard takes you though the field trying to point out the favourites in each class.
THE LMP900 FIELD may look a little disappointing with no official Audi-backed Audis at the field. But the Germans have started the sales of Audis to private teams – and expect at least two private Audi-teams at the LM line up next year. Audi is owned by the VW Group, among other brands in the very same group is Bentley – and next year Bentley is in the position to win the LM 24H – if it is to the VW Group directors to decide. The green Bentleys are testing already with among others Tom Kristensen, 4-times LM-winner as test driver. Tom says it is even faster than the 2002 Spec Audi.
But who is going to drive the Bentleys? I am sure the Group wants to use all its experience letting the winning team of all times, Tom Kristensen, Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro drive Bentley #1. Another Bentley will come with an All-British team of drivers.
American Panoz will probably be back in France next June. But the Americans may get back to the chassis from 2001 names the LMP07. In the 2002 race the private MDB team proved, that the “old” chassis might be better than the current.
French teams Pescarolo and Courage Compétition come with Courage C60 chassis. They have shown they are both able to build fast cars – but I do NOT think they are able to compete against the German experts.
