First drive: 3.9-litre DOHC SFI aluminum alloy V8
7. 3.9-litre DOHC SFI aluminum alloy V8

UNER THE SKIN is a 3.9-litre DOHC, SFI, aluminum alloy V8 engine that drives the rear wheels through Ford’s 5R55 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. Both are found in the Lincoln LS.

This small V8 generates a respectable 252HP at 6100rpm and 267lb.ft. of torque at 4300rpm. The only substantive differences are a lower final-drive ratio in the T-Bird for a bit more off-the-line punch, and a more throaty dual exhaust note.

This combo doesn’t provide a lot of low-end torque, but relatively close gear spacing between 1st. and 2nd. helps the 3863lb. roadster move out pretty quickly, a better than expected 0-60mph time of 7sec. flat, with a 1/4mi. time of 15.28sec. at 92mph. Top speed is around 155mph.
