First drive: Power to the people
4. Power to the people

THE NORMAL COOPER has 115 bhp, which actually for such a relatively small car is enough. Tradition however dictated a Cooper with an S and in order to follow tradition, BMW equipped the 1,6 liter engine with a supercharger. The result: 163 bhp. Combined with a kerbweight of only 1075 kg and the 6-gear gearbox it takes only 7,4 sec. from 0-100 km/h. The Topspeed is a moderate 218 km/h, but you don’t buy a Cooper S as a BMW hunter on the Autobahn, so this number is more an academic one.

You will never feel loss of power no matter if you are driving on the Autobahn or if you just drive up and down a coastal road. Above 4.000 rev the engine truly spins like a cat. The gearlever clicks smoothly trough the gearbox and if you should desire – you can paint the street with rubber not only in the first gear. But don’t forget to switch of the standard equipped traction control.

I recon that 163 bhp is actually enough in everyday life, however, if you wanna have more just visit your local Mini dealer, who now for 5.000 Euro, autch, can fit the Cooper S with a Cooper Works kit from Mike Cooper (son of the legendary John Cooper). But you will leave the garage with 200 bhp und the bonnet and it will only take you 6,7 sec. from 0-100 km/h.
